Irish Guys Are Smiling - And Eating

When It Comes To Corned Beef and Cabbage, Kelly's is in a class by itself.

By Don Wilno

The challenge, Kevin Martin said, is to do something other than the traditional corned beef sandwich, especially as Irish pubs and taverns get ready to celebrate the day devoted to St. Patrick.

Martin, who owns the Celtic Cottage in Long Branch, concedes the best place for the Irish version of a Reuben on St. Patrick's Day - or any other day - is Kelly's Tavern in Neptune City.

"We don't do the Reuben," Martin said. "They (Kelly's) are known for the Reuben. They set the standard."

Being a smart businessman, Martin won't make any attempt to duplicate what Kelly's has made virtually world famous.

"I respect Kelly's and Clancy's (also owned by the Kelly family), and we're not going to go head-to-head with them," Martin said.

But the Celtic Cottage is an Irish place and you can enjoy Irish homecooking and traditional Irish music.

"We're a traditional Irish pub," Martin said.

But, as every Irish pub or tavern owner will tell you, Kelly's is in a league all its own.

While there will be green beer, corned beef and cabbage, bagpipes and countless days (and nights) when you might hear "Oh, Danny boy ... " at any number of Irish hangouts, Kelly's will always be considered the Jersey Shore's most Irish tavern.

"People come from all over the state,," said Kevin Kelly, co-owner of Kelly's with his brother, Ed, to visit on St. Patrick's Day, as you might expect.

"Sometimes you only see them once a year," he said. "They may take the train. It's nice just to see the people. We look forward to it. Everybody gets all dressed up. Everybody really goes out for the day."

It's a day - which begins with breakfast at Kelly's - when everyone is Irish, even those who are not even close to being Irish.

But a visit to Kelly's is not complete without the "Open-faced Reuben," which no competition can duplicate in any way. It consists of rye bread, Russian dressing, corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese and is garnished withe parsley.

For a more Irish version, diners may opt to hold the Russian dressing and substitute cabbage for the sauerkraut.

There is the large Reueben ($10.95), for the hearty appetite, and the "mini" ($7.95) for a normal appetite. Believe it or not, the "mini" is more than enough.

Kelly's will sell a combined 2,500 corned beef sandwiches next week, Kelly said. In preparation for the wearing of the green, Kelly's ordered five tons of corned beef, Kelly said. Just in case you have forgotten how many pounds make a ton, that's 10,000 pounds of corned beef.

"We have 1,000 pounds of potatoes and 1,000 pounds of cabbage," Kelly said of the preparations that take weeks.

The Reuben has been a tradition at Kelly's for the 55 years the family-owned business has been at the Jersey Shore.

"This is a good Irish place "
